In 2024, healthcare executives show optimism after years of fighting multiple crises. However, they are also grappling with challenges—both old and new—that they will need to address to realize a sustainable future. From these challenges emerged four themes: financial sustainability, value-based care, strategic planning, and workforce.
Key Findings
Based on survey responses from 120 executives at organizations across the continuum of care, we found:
Nearly 60% anticipate their financial performance to improve over the next two years.
Expectations of change to future financial performance over the next 2 years compared to current financial performance.

- Stay the same: 23%
- Improve slightly: 46%
- Improve significantly: 12%
35% of respondents achieved less than half of their strategic plans' stated objectives.
While leaders may recognize the importance of strategic planning and value-based care in the long term, intentions do not always align with reality, as organizations focus on more immediate pressures related to financial sustainability and workforce. Respondents indicated the following top concerns over the next three to five years.
